Statement

I have my mother to thank for early encouragement to draw and be creative, although my interest in art was an inevitability. Art is simply the strongest and most important force in my life, I feel that it in some way justifies my existence, therefore my interest in and level of commitment to the disciplines of art have been steadily increasing for most of my life.

Aside from tattooing I had worked mainly in graphite until about 1996, then for a few years I worked almost exclusively in an experimental multi-media style creating books, then in 1999 a book bag containing most of my art (all my early work was burned or given away) including a half finished book, was lost. I was devastated. After taking a month break from art I began to work again, sketching in a completely new fantastical realist style. Losing the bag was the single most important event in my artistic evolution, it changed me forever.

A short while later I started drawing, in this new style, with charcoal. Almost immediately I realized that charcoal was the medium for me, the charcoal had a definite power that graphite did not.

The images that I draw are all, on a basic level, self portraits, as it is with many artists. Very rarely do I have an idea or message I am trying to convey in a particular piece. My best ideas come to me in visions and in dreams, they are nether conscious or subconscious. My designs have no meaning to me nor do i want them to, they simply allow me to continue living.

Nate Hudson passed away in March 2005.
